Printed Matters

A collection of unseen graphic props

This research-led project explores the relationship between sound and graphic design in film through the creation of printed props that never appear on screen. Each piece was developed through close analysis of the films, historical research, and narrative cues, ensuring visual and material accuracy for its specific time period.

Every prop is paired with a QR code that links directly to the scene that inspired it, revealing the dialogue between sound, image, and printed matter.

The films showcased here, in order of appearance, are Carol (2015) and It’s a Wonderful Life (1946).

In total, 21 props were conceptualized and produced. They were housed in a custom-designed box which, when unfolded, transformed into an elegant and practical display system.

All props are presented in a dedicated book alongside the research and design decisions.

Two accompanying posters were also created as part of this exhibition. The first brings together all QR codes into a single composition, triggering a different film scene with each scan. The second combines all props into one image. Reduced opacity is used across both posters to reinforce the idea of the “unseen,” echoing the project’s title.
